As for literacy, ideally it would be something like the medieval system, in which a vulgar language was used by the masses, and elites had their own lingua franca that they could use with each other. In those days, anything serious or scholarly was written in Latin; elites could speak frankly with each other in that language without worrying that the masses would get ahold of it, misunderstand it, and start some or another manner of trouble. That era ended, essentially, with the Protestant belief that anyone can read and interpret the Bible for themselves without some Pope around to do it for them. One can see how that led to the progressive fetish for education, and also to democracy. (It’s also a massive violation of LaVey’s Third Sin of Satanism.)

But you can’t really bring that arrangement back. Too bad. Maybe it can be enough that proles don’t really read books anymore. Now if we can only get elites to not watch television so that that can be left to the proles…
