Say what one will about American democracy, but it *does* offer a MAC. This is the willful act of registering to vote. A serious republic would hold its voters to that.

I’m not crazy about adding a bureaucratic hurdle to achieving adulthood. I’m especially wary about the depth of legal definition that would be required to give the MAC the needed teeth, by specifically disallowing those with a MAC from suing for things they should have known about.

But that’s okay, because I’m pretty sure that it’s not a serious proposal, but is rather an interesting thought experiment about what adulthood and majority are supposed to mean. And as such, I’m inclined to write a SF story incorporating the idea.

I fear the MAC would quickly become an ideological purity test. SM won’t be consulted.

Let them learn on their own.

We can do this: No welfare without the recipient using some kind of long-acting birth control. It makes a lot of sense and would be popular with voters. (Welfare AND free contraceptives! Fewer abortions!)

The vote is the key thing here. My God, this woman who tells us plainly that we cannot even trust her opinion to actually be her opinion STILL wants to be able to VOTE! Not only does she clearly lack any faculties that would enable one to make a sound vote, but we can’t actually know she is voting for what she wants to vote for. It might be uncouth to suggest that slavery for some people is actually preferable, but I’ll make an exception here. She practically has the mind of a slave, and yet she has a voice as to who leads an entire country. LUNACY!

Damn this MAC is a great idea. I would love to see this implemented. We could give it a test run in a small European country. 18 is just an arbitrary age. And instead of having all kinds of different age laws for alcohol, drivers license, R-movies, cigarettes, we could lump it all together in a “proof of agency.”

The “queer” woman referenced at the beginning of the article claims that a casual sexual encounter left her feeling “hurt” and that she feels “raped” by a culture that continually encourages and even obligates her to engage promiscuously in such encounters.

Human Rights is comedy gold in a lunatic ward. I can’t blame blacks, women and queers for exploiting a concept conceived by hetero white men. After all, they used “rights” to overthrow the aristos. We might ponder why it took so long for other groups to claim their own “rights.”
