Sorting my late aunt’s belongings, I found hundreds of Christmas letters, all covering exactly three topics: (1) great things our children accomplished this year, (2) expensive vacations we took, and (3) health problems. I realized that Facebook is the same thing, only daily.

(Which parenthetically explains much about why relations within the family is often more hostile than we might have with outsiders over the same subjects.)

Instagram and their upcoming video service are honestly better for advertisers. People, especially young people, prefer messaging to openly posted, easily-surveilled message.
