So don't post on Facebook anything you wouldn't shout out in a banquet hall filled with everyone you ever knew.

Sorting my late aunt's belongings, I found hundreds of Christmas letters, all covering exactly three topics: (1) great things our children accomplished this year, (2) expensive vacations we took, and (3) health problems. I realized that Facebook is the same thing, only daily.

I am reminded of Chesterton's (possibly apocryphal) comments on clear communication: something to the effect that it is only our failure to communicate clearly that preserves the peace, and that if we truly understood each other perfectly we'd be at each others throats constantly. (Which parenthetically explains much about why relations within the family is often more hostile than we might have with outsiders over the same subjects.)

Oddly enough, this is already being pushed by FB itself with the Whatsapp acquisition. Instagram and their upcoming video service are honestly better for advertisers. People, especially young people, prefer messaging to openly posted, easily-surveilled message.

It's funny that even something like Facebook, which is difficult for a reactionary like myself to outright condemn for its modern-ness, due to the fact it helps me maintain bonds with old friends in an easy manner, is actually a multi-billion dollar attempt to detonate the barrier between public and private life. Luddism rears its head yet again.
