Excellent piece. Really wrestling with this argument. The logical steps are a bit esoteric but the end result rings true. If I had to boil it down I would put it like this: The essence of white progressive power is, ironically (or perversely) embodied in the shaming of oneself for being white. But this very act of self-shaming is as white as it gets! The end result is an infinite loop of shame that can’t be broken and leads to a vortex of despair and self-hatred. This is then projected on to other white people. It becomes the ruling paradigm. If you’re not ashamed of your whiteness you’re not in the club.

First thing I think of here is Robin Williams. Seemed like a nice guy but stuck in a vortex of self-hatred …

First, I agree re:the annihilation of the ego, and though this diverges from slightly, I wanted to discuss some of the pathology leading to this.

In many ways, I believe progressives are incapable of love whether for themselves or any other. If you will pardon the crass expression, I think it would be fair for that collective, in the manner of Keynes, to declare: We are all SWUGs now. It seems to me that the progressive can extol Buddhism, they can be enthused with the Dalhi Lama, they can gush forth with praise of Thich Naht Han, but it is all hollow. Yet another way of making their nihilism sufficiently palatable as to stave off various cosmic horrors and the looming shadow of their own sullied selves.

So what you get is “charity” via tax, and “care” via mandate. Tthis lends itself to a self-perpetuating system that sucks the souls right of people and into the maw of the Sarlacc. They can speak of “public good” to their hearts content, but like a polluted Midas everything they touch turns to shit. And still, despite endless failure they press forward unsatisfied. Why despite doing all this good are they such hollow creatures? Well, to return to Christianity, I will quote St. Paul:

If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing.
