Psychology and its chemically-altered friend, psychiatry, are relatively recent inventions. These scientific fields have taken the place of the religious functions that were occupied by non-state entities in the pre-modern time, addressing the life difficulties of ordinary people using secular personnel. States ordain and employ many of these secular priests, although those priests tend not to obey a strict orthodoxy.
